Canada Day!

What is it about July that incites the masses to protest? Canada day, the 4th of July, and Bastille Day are all in the first days of the month, and all are statements of breaking with authority and civil unrest.

Lizzie & Russ
We had no idea that this Sunday was, in fact, July 1st, and a beloved holiday with the Canucks. My first clue was the Canadian flag-topped donut at the Tim Hortons, the first stop we made once crossing the country border. I thought it was quaint. Then I noticed all the flags as we moved about the country. And still I didn't get it. Then I googled it.

It meant, of course, that camping tonight would be a thing, since every Canadian this side of the Rockies also enjoyed the great outdoors, since Monday was the official holiday.
Lake Wawa

Wawa Goose -- I have no idea
Undaunted we traveled north, following 17 up and over Lake Superior (or, as any Gordon Lightfoot fan knows, Gitchee Gumee). We came upon the small town of Wawa (population 3000), and the lovely lake it's named after. Russ unfolded his kayak, and it promply started to rain.

I check the weather at that point to see if more would be in store. That's when we realized that we weren't getting any breaks with the weather. Just two days ago we dashed out of Michigan to get to cooler climbs, only to be slammed with frigid. The lows that night were to be around 50 degrees. Geez Louise!
When a guy from Trinidad moves to Ontario

We checked the weather of neighboring cities and discovered it wouldn't be quite so cold in White River. So we headed there, and bunked for the night in their Winnie-The-Pooh themed fairgrounds.

We lunched at a restaurant named Kinniwabi, whose owner had migrated from Trinidad. Probably the best jerk chicken north of Tennessee.
